Mornings are so busy! It normally takes us 20-30 minutes to make breakfast from scratch and then we try to do the dishes before we head to work. If we can eliminate two of those steps, it is a win-win! We love to have this in the fridge for the week and just microwave what we want each morning. Healthy- Have I mentioned that this recipe is healthy? Obviously, healthy is a bit of a relative term, depending on what specifically you are tracking. If you are doing keto, or low carb, this is not a great option for you. But, if you are looking for a source of "good carbs" that give us energy, this recipe is perfect!
Full of Protein- The whey protein is an optional add-in for this breakfast. We have made it both ways and enjoy both. Normally, I am looking for ways to get more protein in my diet, so I normally add it in. Even if you don't, there is still a good amount of protein with the peanut butter.
Easy- This recipe is easy to make and only takes about 10 minutes. I always try to make as few dishes as possible to save time during cleanup. You really can't mess this recipe up!
Great as leftovers- Mornings seem to be busy for everybody. Why not make it easier by having breakfast already made? I normally make this oatmeal on a Sunday night and grab a few bites fresh out of the oven :) We then let it cool and refrigerate it.
Full of flavor- Seriously, this is delicious! We have made multiple different baked oatmeals over the year and this is one of our favorites! The peanut butter, apple, and cinnamon are just the perfect combination.
TIP- Make your baked oatmeal in a container that has a lid so you can stack it in your refrigerator.
We love to top ours with a little yogurt in the morning. My husband will put his in a bowl and add a little milk. There are so many options!

This dessert leaves me speechless! When I was on vacation in California a couple of years ago, I bought a churro sundae and fell in love. I loved the cinnamon and sugar combination with ice cream. My husband and I recently went to potluck at our friend's house and I signed up to make dessert. We were doing a Mexican food theme so I thought churros would be perfect! I figured that churros by themselves would not be adequate. (You have to bring your A game when you are serving your food to other people) I thought I could add some ice cream and a fun caramel sauce and re-create my sundae from California. It was a success!
I had never made churros before, so naturally I headed to Pinterest. There have been multiple times I have used recipes from Natasha's Kitchen and have been impressed. This recipe is by far the best though! You can find the recipe for churros here. I am a visual learner, so I loved watching her video before I attempted making my own churros.
Overall, churros are easy to make. It took a little while for me to figure out exactly how long I wanted mine to be and my system for frying, draining, coating, and then storing them.
For my sundae dessert, I wanted to make a simple caramel sauce. Remembering my Spanish days in high school, Dulce de Leche is a "sweet milk" sauce. I thought this would be perfect for our potluck dessert. I stumbled across Natasha's SUPER easy recipe and it is now going to be a staple in my house. Seriously, go check it out here! All you need is a crock pot, two jars, and a can of sweetened condensed milk. I love this recipe because of its simplicity, but also how little dishes it creates. I went ahead and stored the sauce in the fridge in the two jars and just washed the crockpot. It COULD NOT be any easier!! Not to mention delicious. I got many compliments on the dessert and the sauce. Seriously, go check it out!
Can I Make These Ahead of Time?
I RECOMMEND NOT MAKING THESE IN ADVANCE! As with any donut, churros taste best fresh. We ate a few within the first 5 minutes and they were amazing! By the time we had our dessert at potluck (about 2 hours later) they had already gone down in quality. They were still delicious, but nothing compared to FRESH out of the pan.
We stuck our leftover dough in the fridge and made some churros for breakfast the next morning and they REALLY went down in quality! Honestly, they are not worth your calories at that point. Eat them fresh or not at all, your hips will thank me!
Can I Freeze Churros?
Again, yes you can freeze them, but they are SIGNIFICANTLY better fresh! We had a few leftover churros from our potluck dinner. You know me, I NEVER throw food away so I stuck them in the freezer. (We love to have things like this on hand when we make our own ice cream flurries.) They are still good, but I would not recommend serving them to others. We have our typical food, and then company food. I don't think frozen churros are worthy of the title "company food". Don't just take my word for it, try it out yourself. You might like them better frozen!
Another reason I loved this summer dessert was because it was so unique. It seems like we have a lot of cookies and bars, but this dessert is so different! You could eat this dessert any time of the year, but I recommend in the summer on a hot day. It is so refreshing, especially if you make your own ice cream or buy soft serve from your local ice cream shop. Enjoy!
If you are new to my blog, welcome! I try to make my food as fast as I can, as good as I can, and with the least amount of dishes that I can. It is all about practicality! We are all busy and nobody wants to be in the kitchen for 2+ hours, ESPECIALLY if you have just gotten home from work. Ain't nobody got time for that! Don't get me wrong, I love cooking and baking! There are times though that it is hobby and then there are times where you are in survival mode. It is 5:00, you are tired, you don't want to cook, but yet know your family needs to eat. Here at living practically you will find quick meals that should only take about 30 minutes to prepare so you can get on with the rest of your day!
Another thing you might not know is that I like to save money. I try to go grocery shopping as few as times as possible. Every time you go to the store you spend money. Many times you go to the store you spend more money than you thought you would. Many times you walked out of the store having bought three times the amount of things that you went in for. So, you want to cut back on your grocery bill? Stop going to the store! Use what you have at home already. Plan your meals based on what you have in your fridge and what is going to go bad the soonest.
This is a Stromboli that I put inside some dough to make a calzone. That is the beautiful thing about Stromboli, you can do so much with it. Down below I have the "recipe" I use to make Stromboli. Remember, I don't normally follow a recipe, I just add a little of this and a little of that. I have the basics listed in the recipe but each time I make Stromboli it tastes just a little bit different. Make this your own!
I like to make Stromboli the day I go to the grocery store or just one day after. Many times I will buy a fresh loaf of French bread (for about $1) if there is a good price. I will cut it in half, pull out some of the insides, stuff with this Stromboli mixture, layer some mozzarella cheese on top, and cover with the top half of the French loaf. I normally throw it in the oven around 350 for about 20 minutes so the cheese can melt. You could use other breads too! We have used brioche, Hawaiian, and ciabatta, but French is our favorite.
Another way we like to eat Stromboli is a stuffing inside pizza dough. You can do this as a calzone or a braid. They are pretty comparable in their level of ease. We have boughten pizza dough from a can before and it was perfect! We have also made our own from scratch which was also perfect! Obviously, from a can is easier but you do whatever works best for you and your family! All you need to do is roll out the dough (however you have gotten it), put your meat mixture inside, top with a nice layer of cheese, enclose with dough, and bake. It couldn't be any easier!
Can I freeze Stromboli?
Yes, definitely! You can freeze just the meat mixture and pull it out for a quick meal. Just thaw for a few hours, give it a good stir, and it should be ready to go!
I would not recommend freezing the meat mixture with the bread as it will get soggy. You could freeze it as a calzone or braid though.
Meal Plan tip- REPURPOSE FOOD
There are certain foods that we think are just not near as good as leftovers, so I have learned to repurpose food.
On Sunday, we had hamburgers. We used 1/2 pound of ground beef and then put the other half of raw meat in the fridge. Leftover hamburgers are not our favorite, so instead of making the whole pound of meat into hamburgers we opted to use that meat in another way later. On Monday, I grabbed that 1/2 pound of ground beef and fried it up for our taco meat.
You will notice that most of our suppers this week feature pork. On Tuesday, I am going to grill a large pork tenderloin. I know that my husband and I are not going to be able to eat the whole thing. So, I am planning on using that meat in unique ways so we are not just having "leftover pork" and we are not throwing anything away. I like to call this repurposing your food. Many people are not a fan of leftovers. Depending on the specific dish, I can be that person. I typically count my calories and I HATE wasting them on food that is not great. So, instead of merely eating leftovers for days, we repurposed those leftovers and create a whole new dish!
For Wednesday, the meat is already cooked, so that will save me time. I will just shred the leftover pork from Tuesday, add some BBQ and a few spices, put it over some Mac'n Cheese and it won't even taste like leftovers!
Thursday will be similar to Wednesday. I will sauté some carrots, throw in some of the leftover pork, broccoli, ramen noodles (not the spice packet, just the noddles), soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and a few spices like ginger. This will be a fast dinner that will be ready in about 20 minutes!
We like to eat pretty healthy during the week and splurge a little on the weekend. Chicken Parmesan is one of my husband's favorites and it is surprisingly easy to make. I always keep chicken in the freezer, so I will thaw that on Friday morning. Depending on the size of the chicken breasts, I might use my tenderizer. I put some spices in a bowl with my bread crumbs. Coat the chicken really well and then do a light frying in a skillet. (I am going to use my cast iron skillet so I don't have two separate dishes to do.) Pour a little pasta sauce and some cheese on top. Stick in the oven on high, maybe around 400 till the cheese melts and it is ready to go! I also have tortellini in the freezer so while the chicken is in the oven, I will throw those in some boiling water for about 5 minutes. While those are cooking, I am preparing the salad and cleaning up as I go. When the tortellini are done, I coat with pasta sauce and maybe a little garlic salt. Viola! A quick and delicious supper in about 20 minutes!
I know that I said we try not to have too many leftovers throughout the week, but sometimes I just don't know what we will have leftovers of and how much. Sometimes it is just hard to know what you will be eating a week from now. It is SO important to not throw food away. So, giving myself one night a week to use it works for our family. You might never have leftovers, or you might need 2-3 nights a week to eat up your leftovers. You do you! I typically plan one night a week to use up our leftovers. If we don't have leftovers, we might order in, throw in a pizza or I will make something quick like tilapia. Do you remember when you were in elementary school and the cafeteria said you ere having "Chef's Choice" for lunch? That is what we are talking about here :)
These are a wonderful combination of peanut butter and chocolate. When you need a little something sweet, these are just perfect!

There is something so exhilarating when you make something homemade that you never envisioned yourself making. There was a time in my life where I would have said, "Who has time to make their own granola bars?" or "Why would you make your own granola bars, the ones at the store are just as good."
During our triathlon a few years ago, a friend of mine made these granola bars. I absolutely fell in love! I was shocked at how different they taste from anything at the grocery store. It was as sweet as a cookie, but yet gave me fuel like an energy bar. Needless to say, I asked for the recipe and she GLADLY shared.
My husband is a huge fan of these granola bars too. We ALWAYS have some of these in the freezer as a quick and healthy snack. He likes to grab one in the morning for his lunchbox and eat it about an hour later when it is partially thawed. I like them straight out the freezer. To each their own. We might not agree on the best way to eat them, but we definitely agree that they are delicious!
As you can see, most of these ingredients you probably already have in your house. I had a hard time finding where the wheat germ was at our local grocery store and had to ask an employee. There are a couple of items I buy at Costco because they are such a good deal. But, all of these should be at your local store.
Buying honey in bulk has been very cost effective. I normally do just use this big container, but you could easily refill a smaller bottle if that is easier for you. I found that Costco runs really good deals on Craisins and honey, so I normally stock up when I go a couple of times throughout the year. You don't have to use Craisins, any dried fruit would work. My husband and I own a blueberry farm (go check it out here- www.sunriseharvestfarms.com) so we have dried blueberries on hand. We do really like that flavor combo with a few Craisins too.

Something I recently discovered was that you don't have to make them into actual granola bars. Uh, duh Jenna! I don't know why it took me so long to figure it out, but you can just form them into little bites and call them "granola bar bites". I think that these are a little easier to make and store, but we still love the bars too. That is the beauty of it, make it your own!
Making your own granola is so much easier than what you might think. It tastes significantly better than any that you buy at the store and it is cheaper! Give this recipe a try and I promise you will NEVER go back to buying granola at the store.
I always have a container of granola on hand at our house. It is delicious by the handfuls, as cereal, or on top your yogurt for a little homemade parfait.
One thing that I love about making your own granola is that you can control the amount of sugar that you put in it. Normally I follow the recipe though and just eat the granola in moderation. Even though this recipe is healthy, granola is still a high calorie food. Be careful, this stuff is ADDICTING!
My husband is not a fan of the dried fruit in the granola so sometimes I leave that out.
We always have a container of fresh granola in our cabinet. It is really easy to make and lasts for a long time. I have heard that you can freeze granola too. We have never needed to because we eat it pretty quickly, way before it has the chance to go bad. But, you could easily make a batch and freeze some for later.
I wish that food bloggers could insert smells into their posts. If we could, I would for this granola. I remember as a kid coming home from school many times to the smell of granola right out of the oven. When you make this recipe, I promise, you will not be able to eat just one handful!
